What Actually Makes Someone Musical?

  • Musical ability isn’t one fixed trait — rhythm, motivation, communication, and personal effort rank higher in research than having a “good ear” or being able to read music.

Neuroscience shows that every brain learns differently — how much a learning experience actually changes the brain depends on time spent practising, not some fixed level of talent. Musicality itself turns out to depend mostly on the ability to learn, rather than being a trait you either have or don’t.

Early exposure to music matters in a very concrete way too: it helps develop what researchers call aural schemata — the mental frameworks we build up over time to make sense of what we hear.

So what actually makes someone “musical”? One study asked people to rank the components of musical ability, and the results were revealing. Rhythmic ability, the organisation of sound, motivation, communication, personal characteristics, integrating a range of skills, and performing in front of a group all ranked near the top. Having a “good ear” ranked lower. Musical appreciation and the ability to read music ranked lower still. What stands out is how high motivation and personal characteristics landed on that list — the clear takeaway is that personal effort is one of the biggest factors in becoming musical, more than most people assume.

That holds true in a school setting too — the amount of effort a student puts in matters enormously.

There’s experimental evidence for this as well. A well-known study by Schellenberg1 followed four groups of children: one took music lessons, one took drama lessons, one took part in another artistic activity, and one took no lessons at all. Every group’s IQ increased somewhat over the course of the study — but the music group’s IQ rose by roughly 7 points, compared to about 4.3 points for the other arts groups. The most likely explanation isn’t something mystical about music itself: it’s the individual concentration, focus, and one-on-one instruction that music lessons uniquely demand, building stronger motivation and better learning strategies overall.
